David Abello

David became involved in the lesbian and gay movement in 1975, at the tail end of the gay liberation period. He was active in the events in Sydney in 1978. In the 1980s he was a member of the Gay Liberation Quire and the Gaywaves Gay Radio Collective.
David has been active in the disability movement since the 1980s and in membership-based organisations concerned with employment, advocacy, multicultural advocacy and housing. In the late 1990s he was a founding member of the queer disability activist group, Access Plus Spanning Identities.
David’s most recent career was as a social policy researcher at UNSW. In 2017 he was awarded a PhD by UTS for his thesis ‘In Memory of Now: A Queer History of the Present’, which is available at http://hdl.handle.net/10453/120249 David is a member of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 78ers Advisory Group and Patron of METRO Community Housing Co-operative.
